It was reported this morning that a quarter of its MPs have additional incomes, including those with property empires and an NHS surgeon.
However, the SNP recently passed orders that demand all MPs, MSPs and MEPs treat their role as a full-time occupation.
And prior to the May 2015 General Election, senior SNP MP Pete Wishart said he objected to MPs having second jobs, and that any new nationalist intake would place Westminster front and centre of their working lives.
Scottish Conservative Mid Scotland and Fife MSP Murdo Fraser has now written to Nicola Sturgeon asking her to clarify the rules.
He said while the Scottish Conservatives don’t object to parliamentarians having other interests – adding that it could even be a benefit – voters were still entitled to know what the SNP’s actual position on the matter was.
Scottish Conservative Mid Scotland and Fife MSP Murdo Fraser said:
“Before last May’s election, the SNP made it pretty clear its MPs would focus on Westminster and Westminster alone.
“But now we learn at least a quarter of its MPs in the UK Parliament have other professional interests.
“If the SNP has dropped its resolution, it should say as much.
“Otherwise, there is a clear contradiction in what the party said before the election, and what is happening in practice now.
“There is nothing wrong with parliamentarians having additional jobs, and this can even be of benefit to their work as elected members providing it doesn’t intrude on their professional time.
“But if the SNP has had a dramatic change in policy on this, voters deserve to know.”
